learning experiences
As an active member of London Independent Photography I have been able to present my work for comment, do courses & improve my learning experiences.
As well as being able to develop the confidence to start exhibiting my own work publicly.
In April I will be doing a workshop lead by Nick Lockett,
Entitled ” an introduction to large format photography.”
This introduction to large format photography will consider ways to see and think differently when using a view camera. You will learn the basics of camera movements, loading sheet film, and mastering the controls. If you are considering making images with a more contemplative style using a view camera, this session is for you.
In the workshop Nick will initially show some of his television and film stills, telling some of the stories behind the pictures. He’ll then talk about his passion for large format photography, show his own work and demonstrate view camera operations. You will have the opportunity to try it for yourself. If you already have a large format camera, do bring it along.
About Nick: Nick Lockett was Chief Photographer for Central Television and Head of Pictures for Carlton Television, producing still images and picture publicity on TV programmes as diverse as INSPECTOR MORSE, SPITTING IMAGE and POP IDOL. He now works as a freelance photographer, and teaches fine art photography at De Montfort University. He lives in Derbyshire, and much of his personal photography is concerned with ancient sites and trackways near his home in the Peak District. Recent exhibitions include ‘The Portway – A Line Through Time’ and ‘Ancient Stones, Sacred Places’.

I am in the process of getting this picture ready to submit to the Open Salon at the Viewfinder Gallery in Greenwich, London.
This image was taken almost 2 years ago now, on the Prom in Southwold, Sufflok.
At the time I was using a Canon G9 -point & shoot camera.

Open Salon 2010
25 February to 14 March
For the third time, London’s Viewfinder Photography Gallery is turning its walls over to the public for an exhibition where every image it receives will be shown.
Open Salon 2010 will see hundreds of diverse photographs exhibited at the Greenwich gallery between 25 February to 14 March.
Anyone can enter a photograph, which can be on any subject, from any genre; by professional photographers or first-timers.
To help support the gallery which is an exempted charity, entries are subject to a £10 handling charge.
Those unable to bring a photograph to the gallery in person are invited to email their entry – for an additional £5, the Viewfinder will print it at 5×7″ and pin the image as part of the exhibition. Email entrants will be able to collect your image at the end of the exhibition.
All participants are invited to the opening party, on Thursday 25 February, 7-9pm.
Curator Louise Forrester said: “The Open Salons 2006 and 2008 were very exciting. This is a great opportunity for local photographers to show their work, and also for the gallery to raise funds to support future exhibitions.”
Mirror plates for hanging the Open Salon 2010 have been generously sponsored by Arch Gallery.

model management

Last weekend I did Carlo Nicora’s Shaping Locations workshop. A great experience to work alongside a good mentor who produces some fantastic work himself.
The day was good in many ways as it developed my attention to what is demanded for a ‘Successful Shoot’
from the basics of knowing my new camera- a Canon EOS 5D Mark 2 , being able to use, understand & demonstrate effective lighting techniques of both ones subject -the models & the background or Location setting.
But most importantly with all these things set up correctly I found – ‘ The Shoot’ was dependent on a good team spirit of those assisting & a great relationship with ‘ The Models ‘. This relationship often drives the shoot, enabling great results! But its key dynamics include fostering a relationship of trust & remembering that the model is also a human being.
The hardest part of the day was dealing with the extreme cold weather in London, thankfully there was not rain or strong winds !
